Second Spartan Race

Last weekend a bunch of us here in Colorado Springs attended the Spartan Race on Fort Carson and here’s what it’s like.

You’ve no doubt seen lots of videos of Spartan Races but just in case you can check out these ones to see what it’s all about. It’s essentially an obstacle course that is challenging but also extremely fun. You’ll struggle during this event but it will be worth it because of your fellow Spartans who are fighting to the finish right along side you.

In fact, this is probably one difference I’ve noticed about this race that I haven’t seen in more typical running races etc. There is competition but unless you are an elite participant (a separate entry class) the event is more about supporting your friends and getting through it together. You’ll see people of all different body types and abilities on the race course. The inclusive nature of the race is partially facilitated by the option to do burpees at each obstacle instead of completing the task. You’re also supposed to do burpees if you fail the obstacle.

Obstacles consist of carrying heavy objects from point a to point b, scrambling over cargo-net pyramids, ducking under muddy water to bypass walls, crawling under barbwire while getting sprayed with cold water or anything else the creative designers at Spartan Race can think of. Each race is different so you never know quite what to expect.

You can enter any one of three lengths of race depending on the event. The distance varies but so do the obstacles. You’ll do fewer obstacles on a Sprint than you will a Super. Another facet that guarantees a challenge for anyone who cares to take it up.
