Five Subaru Gift Ideas for Adventurous Owners

Gear

Wondering what Subaru gift to give this holiday season?

Sure, your Subaru driving friend or family member already has a killer outdoor kit with the newest and shiniest skis, or the most trick climbing gear. You’re not about to try and guess their size to kit them out with new Gore-Tex or merino wool either. So what do you get them for Christmas? Here are some ideas for Subaru gifts that should give you a range of prices and ideas.

Bridgestone Blizzak
Yokoama iceGUARD
Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9

Snow Tires

A set of snow tires is possibly the absolute best Subaru gift you could give someone who likes to play in the snow. Likely, they’ve already got killer outdoor gear but have probably neglected to outfit their Subaru with the critical traction that will keep them from becoming a statistic on I-70 this winter. Before you complain about Subarus already being amazing in the snow (true), you should know that snow tires trump even All-Wheel-Drive for most winter driving situations where traction is sub-par. Here are three options that we go to.

We like both the Bridgestone Blizzak and the Yokohama Ice Guard for a normal and effective snow tire. If you deal with “typical” winter conditions these tires have nice driving manners and will last you several seasons if you swap them out once warmer weather comes back.

If you are faced with very icy conditions on a regular basis then you may want to go with a studded tire. We like the Nokian Hakkepelitta 9.  Keep in mind that some places require you to remove studded snow tires after a certain date in the spring. Studded tires place extra wear on road surfaces so it’s best to remove them once the ice is gone. Also, you’ll just wear your studs down if you drive them on tarmac too much.

Ruffwear Dirtbag Seat Cover

Ruffwear makes really well designed covers for the bench seat in your Subaru. These covers are waterproof and will keep four-legged adventure partners from soaking the upholstery with melting snow, slush and mud. Plenty of folks seem to think they need these for their human adventure partners as well. These pack into their own pocket and go on super fast by just looping the straps over the head rests. You can even get one with custom Subaru branding here.

OEM Subaru Cargo Tray

All-Weather Cargo Tray

These are a great idea any time of year but are especially great in winter. Think about it, after your aprés ski beer your posse will pile all their wet and sweaty gear in the back of the Subaru. It won’t take long for the partially dried carpet back there to take on a not so aromatic aroma. A cargo tray will capture most of that water or mud before it can get into the carpet and cause your friend to complain about you stinking up their car. Cleaning is a cinch too, just pull it out and hit it with a hose once in a while.

These are widely available from both Subaru dealers as well as third parties but many Subarus came with a tray so be sure your gift-ee doesn’t already have this. Also, they are model and year specific so be sure to pay attention when you make an order.

Severe Weather Kit

This Subaru gift is something that should be compact and in your car at all times. It’s better to be prepared and not have to give it any more thought. It may feel a little like giving them socks but this is one item that everyone should have that almost nobody actually does. The kit should have:

  • Drinking water (in winter, you’ll want to remember that this could likely be frozen so plan accordingly)
  • Rain Poncho
  • Emergency Blanket(s)
  • Candles and Waterproof matches
  • An Emergency Whistle
  • Warning Triangles or even better, road flares
  • First Aid Kit
  • Small Shovel (we often have an avalanche shovel on board anyway and have dug cars out with one before)
  • Ice Scraper/brush
  • Headlamp

You can easily get a lot of these items inexpensively and outfit a few of your friends with them at the same time or just buy kits online or at your local dealer.

Subaru Severe Weather Companion
OEM Foglights

Fog Lights

Most Subarus will accept fog lights even if they didn’t come as original equipment. We can’t over emphasize how nice these are in winter. For snowy areas, they help cut through road mist from other cars or fog. In more maritime areas where rain and fog are common place, they have equal if not greater value. This is an item that your Subaru friend may not even realize they have an option to add as an upgrade to their own Subaru. There are many, many options for fog lights so do a little research. If you prefer an OEM option, check these out. You can also find some great after market lights from manufacturers like Morimoto.

The possibilities are almost unlimited when it comes to add-ons to increase the utility of your Subaru sport utility. Think in terms of the person’s lifestyle to help choose Subaru themed gifts. Do they have dogs? How about a pet barrier or a cargo box to move gear out of the car and make room for Fido? Maybe some window tint, a clear bra? The list is endless. Comment below with the best Subaru gift you’ve ever received or would like to receive.
